Safe and Sound: Ensuring Your Newborn’s Comfort During Photography Sessions

As a mother and a photographer, I know there is nothing more precious than your little one. This sentiment is the cornerstone of my approach to newborn photography, where safety and care are at the heart of every session. At Kerry Annette Photography, I’m honored to capture the fleeting moments of your baby’s first days of life. But as much as I’m passionate about creating timeless images, your baby’s safety always comes first.

As a mother and a photographer, I know there is nothing more precious than your little one. At Kerry Annette Photography, I’m honored to capture the fleeting moments of your baby’s first days of life. But as much as I’m passionate about creating timeless images, your baby’s safety always comes first.

Newborn photography is a delicate art. Those heart-melting poses that look effortless are actually the result of careful planning, preparation, and technique—all designed with your baby’s safety and comfort in mind. Here are some of the ways I ensure your newborn is safe during their session:

1. Studio Hygiene

Before your session, the studio is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. All props, blankets, and outfits are freshly laundered with baby-safe detergents. Hand sanitizer is always within reach, and I take extra care to ensure a clean and comfortable environment.

2. Comfortable Temperatures

Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes, so I keep the studio warm and cozy to mimic the womb’s environment. A space heater is often used to ensure your baby feels snug and secure throughout the session.

3. Supportive Posing Techniques

Many popular newborn poses, such as the “froggy pose,” are created with composite editing or require hands-on support. I never force your baby into a position that isn’t natural or safe. Every pose is done with their comfort in mind, and their head and neck are always supported.

4. Trained Assistant and Spotters

For sessions requiring more complex setups, I work with trained assistants or ask a parent to act as a spotter. This ensures your baby is always secure and supervised, whether in a prop or on a posing pillow.

5. Following Baby’s Lead

Your baby’s comfort is my guide. If they show signs of discomfort or fussiness, I’ll adjust the session accordingly. There is no rush, and plenty of time is built in for feeding, soothing, and snuggles.

6. Safe Props and Materials

All props used during the session are carefully selected for safety. From baskets to wraps, each item is inspected to ensure there are no sharp edges, loose parts, or materials that could irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.

7. Clear Communication

Before your session, I’ll go over everything you can expect and answer any questions you may have. I encourage parents to share any concerns or special requests so that we can work together to create a safe and enjoyable experience.

8. First Aid Knowledge

As an added precaution, I stay informed about basic infant first aid. While emergencies are incredibly rare, being prepared gives me peace of mind and ensures that I can act quickly and effectively if needed.

Why Safety Matters

Your newborn’s well-being is more important than any pose or photo. Creating beautiful images is a collaboration that starts with trust. By prioritizing safety, I’m able to give you both stunning photographs and the assurance that your baby is in the best hands.

Let’s Capture These Precious Moments

Newborn sessions are more than photoshoots; they’re a celebration of new life and the love that surrounds your growing family. By prioritizing safety, we can ensure this experience is as joyful and stress-free as possible.

If you’re ready to book your session or have any questions about the process, I’m here to help. Let’s create memories you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

With love,
Kerry

The Secret to Calming Your Baby for Perfect Photos

Preparing your baby for a photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful! In our latest blog, we’re sharing tried-and-true tips to keep your little one calm and content during their session. From the magic of white noise to the importance of cozy comfort and perfect timing, these simple strategies will help ensure both you and your baby enjoy the experience. Whether you’re capturing memories at home or in the studio, these tips are your key to stress-free, beautiful photos. Read more to discover the secrets to a smooth photoshoot!

As a photographer specializing in newborn and children’s sessions, one of the most common questions I get from parents is, “How do you get the baby to stay so calm and sleepy?” The truth is, it’s not just about the camera or lighting—it’s about creating the perfect environment for your little one to feel relaxed and comfortable. Whether you’re preparing for a professional photoshoot or just snapping memories at home, these tips can help ensure your baby stays calm and content.

1. Embrace the Power of White Noise
White noise works wonders for calming babies, mimicking the soothing sounds they heard in the womb. A portable white noise machine or even a white noise app on your phone can help create a serene atmosphere. Bonus: it’s also great for drowning out any unexpected noises during a photoshoot!

2. Keep It Cozy
Babies love warmth. To help them feel secure and sleepy, make sure the room is warm but not overly hot. Using a soft, cozy wrap or blanket can also provide the perfect level of comfort. For professional sessions, I always ensure my studio is set to an optimal temperature for newborns.

3. Time It Right
Timing is everything when it comes to photographing newborns. The best time for a shoot is during their sleepiest part of the day. For most newborns, this is right after a feeding. A full tummy usually means a happy, sleepy baby!

4. Gentle Movements for Big Results
If your baby starts to fuss, gentle rocking or a light patting motion can work wonders. Keeping movements slow and soothing helps settle them without overstimulating.

5. Patience is Key
Every baby is different, and sometimes they just need a little extra time to settle. Staying calm and patient can help reassure both the baby and their parents (yes, that’s you!). Remember, it’s perfectly okay to take breaks as needed.

Why These Tips Work
Babies are incredibly sensitive to their environment, and small adjustments can make a big difference. By focusing on their comfort and needs, you’re not only setting the stage for stunning photos but also creating a beautiful bonding experience.

Let’s Capture the Magic Together!
At Kerry Annette Photography, I take pride in creating a calm, welcoming space where babies and families feel at ease. Whether it’s your first newborn session or you’re coming back to capture another milestone, I’m here to help preserve these fleeting moments forever.

Memphis Milestones: Capturing Your Baby’s First Years in Photos

One minute, your baby is a newborn in your arms and then you blink and they are running around your house as a toddler. Professional milestone sessions help to capture every moment of your child’s life and give you precious memories that can be passed on for generations.

Hello, Memphis! As a mother of 4, and a grandmother of 9, I'm here to chat about something near and dear to my heart—and if you're a parent, likely yours too: capturing every wonderful wrinkle and adorable moment of your baby’s first years. As a seasoned photographer with a love for little ones and their milestone moments, I've had the honor of documenting these early days for countless families. Here’s why and how you should consider doing the same.

The Swift Passage of Time

It's said all too often because it's painfully true—babies don’t keep. One day they're in your arms and the next, they're toddling around like pint-sized tornadoes and then the next thing you know they are starting school. This fleeting nature of infancy is why capturing milestones in your child’s first years is so vital. It's about freezing time, just for a moment, to hold onto their babyhood a little longer.

Why Focus on Milestones?

In the whirlwind of the first years—from sleepless nights to first smiles—every moment feels significant, and yet, it all blurs together. Here’s why focusing on milestones with professional photos can be so impactful:

  1. Remember the Milestones: Whether it’s the first smile, the first time sitting up, crawling, or walking, each milestone is a testament to your baby's rapid growth and the unique journey of your family.

  2. Share with Loved Ones: In our wonderful Memphis community, family and friends often feel like an extension of our own hearts. Sharing these milestone photos helps bridge distances and deepen connections, making your village feel a part of your child's growth.

  3. Celebrate Achievements: Each developmental milestone is an achievement, not just for your baby but for you as parents. Celebrating these can boost your spirit and offer encouragement through the more challenging phases of parenting.

Planning the Milestone Photo Sessions

Capturing the essence of each stage requires a bit more than just a good camera. It needs a good plan. Here's how I approach these milestone sessions:

  • Timing is Everything: We aim for specific developmental milestones: newborn, three months (hello, first smiles!), six months (sitting pretty), nine months (crawling champs), and twelve months (the big one!) and then the years that follow.

  • Keep it Simple: Simple backgrounds and minimal props ensure that the focus remains on your baby’s features and expressions.

  • Outfit Choices: Outfits that are comfortable and complement your baby's current stage can enhance the photos without overshadowing their natural charm.

The Art of Storytelling Through Photos

As a photographer who has seen nearly every iteration of baby antics, my goal is to tell your story through these photos. Each session is tailored to capture the unique personality and milestones of your baby, creating a narrative that feels as intimate and individual as your own family's story.

Why Memphis Parents Choose Kerry Annette Photography

At Kerry Annette Photography, our commitment to capturing your baby’s first years with authenticity and patience is why so many Memphis parents trust us with these precious moments.

As we wrap up, remember that the first years might fly by, but the memories we capture will endure, allowing you to relive those fleeting moments time and again. Whether it's the serene sleep of a newborn or the jubilant jumble of a first birthday or kindergarten graduation, these photos will be your time capsules, treasured for generations.

Looking to preserve your baby's first years with timeless photography? Let’s chat about how we can make these milestones unforgettable!

Why Memphis and Mid-South Parents Love Cake Smash Photography

As a seasoned photographer with a deep-seated love for capturing life's fleeting moments, there’s nothing quite like the sheer joy and utter chaos of a cake smash session. Today, I’m here to share with you why cake smash photography has become a beloved tradition among Memphis and Mid-South parents, and why it might just be the perfect celebration for your little one’s milestone.

Hello, friends!

The Joyous Mess

Imagine this: A beautiful cake, artfully decorated and just waiting to be demolished. Now, picture a one-year-old with eyes as wide as saucers, given free reign to dive into that cake with hands, feet, and face. It’s not just a mess; it’s an adorable scene of independence and delight. As a photographer and a lover of all things baby, capturing these moments is so much fun. I let the baby take their time and together we get to watch him/her discover the yummy goodness of CAKE!

Let them get messy :)

This baby girl had no issues with diving right in! Her smash-cake photography session with Kerry Annette Photography was so much fun! She bathed herself in pink frosting and I captured every second of it!

Why Memphis and Mid-South Parents Adore This Tradition

Memphis, with its warm, family-oriented community, embraces the playful and heartfelt nature of cake smash photography. Here are a few reasons why local parents can't get enough of it:

  1. It’s a Celebration of Milestones: The first birthday is a significant milestone not just for the baby but for the parents too. It’s a celebration the baby and the parents first year together as a family! What better way to mark this occasion than with a fun event that tells your child, "Life is delicious—and messy!"

  2. Memorable Moments: In our digital age, where every moment seems fleeting, Memphis parents cherish having tangible memories. Photos from a cake smash session are vibrant, colorful, and full of life. They capture the essence of childhood—unrestrained joy and innocence.

  3. Incredibly Customizable: Whether it’s a cake that nods to a nursery rhyme, color theme or a backdrop that echoes Memphis’ bluesy backdrop, each session is as unique as the little one celebrating their day. Parents love the opportunity to tailor the session, making it a truly personal experience.

  4. The Pictures Are Priceless: There’s something inherently hilarious and heartwarming about a baby covered in cake. These photos often become the highlights of birthday parties and the talk of family gatherings, and let's not forget their rightful place in the graduation slideshow!

Setting the Scene for the Perfect Cake Smash

As a photographer who has orchestrated more cake smashes than I can count, here are my insider tips to make your session a hit:

  • Choose the Right Cake: Soft, creamy cakes work best for smashing. Avoid fondant-covered cakes, as they can be tough for little hands to break apart.

  • Keep It Safe and Sweet: Ensure the cake is baby-friendly. It should have less sugar, soft icing, and non-toxic decorations that are large enough not to be a choking hazard.

  • Outfit and Theme: From classic to contemporary, the theme you choose can reflect your family’s style or your baby’s personality. Whether it’s vibrant and lively or soft and pastel, make sure it’s something that will make you smile for years to come.

  • The Smash Plan: Some babies dive right in, while others need a little encouragement. A familiar toy or a practice session with a cupcake at home can help make the actual event go smoothly.

Let them eat cake!

During a smash cake session, some babies don’t know how to react when we set them in front of their cake. It is a good idea to give them a little sample before the session.

Capturing Every Giggle and Grin

My goal during these sessions isn’t just to take pictures; it’s to capture a story—the story of your family, your love, and your baby’s first big adventure with food. It’s about the giggles, the tentative first tastes, and the frosting-coated fingers. It’s about creating joyful memories that will last a lifetime.

So, why do Memphis and Mid-South parents love cake smash photography? Because it’s more than just photos. It’s a rite of passage, a celebration of growth, and a delightful affirmation of life’s sweetest moments. If you’re considering a cake smash for your little one, remember: it’s not about the perfect shot, but the perfect moment. And trust me, there’s nothing more perfect than a baby with a cake.

Until next time, keep those cameras snapping and those babies laughing!

Capture Every Moment!

Capturing these fun moments is what a cake smash session is all about!

Choosing the Right Photographer for Your Family in Memphis, TN

Choosing the right photographer is about trust, style, and that special something that makes your family’s personality shine through the photos.

Hello, Memphis families! As someone who’s spent decades behind the lens capturing the tender moments of childhood and the unbreakable bonds of family, I know a thing or two about what makes a photography session successful. Today, I want to share some pearls of wisdom on choosing the right photographer for your family. It's about trust, style, and that special something that makes your family’s personality shine through the photos.

Understanding the Importance of Family Photography

Before we dive into how to choose a photographer, let’s talk about why these photos matter. They're not just about documenting growth or change; they’re about capturing the essence of your family at this moment in time. These photos tell your story, they celebrate your heritage, and yes, they even show off those adorably quirky traits that make your family uniquely yours.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Photographer

Selecting the right photographer for your family can be a bit like matchmaking. Here are the key factors to consider:

  1. Style and Vision: Each photographer has a distinct style. Do you prefer candid, natural shots that capture the spontaneity of moments, or are you enamored with more structured, posed photographs? Look through portfolios to find a style that resonates with you.

  2. Experience and Specialization: Not all photographers excel in all types of photography. Some have a knack for newborns, while others shine with family groups. Here in Memphis, where every family is diverse, finding someone who knows how to work with children and capture the warmth of family interactions is key.

  3. Personality and Interaction: The photographer’s ability to connect with your family will significantly influence the session's success. You want someone who can make you laugh, put your children at ease, and bring out your best smiles.

  4. Reviews and Testimonials: What better way to gauge a photographer's prowess than hearing from other Memphis families? Look for someone with glowing testimonials that highlight not just the quality of the photos, but also the photographer’s manner and professionalism.

  5. Logistics: Consider the location, availability, and pricing. Memphis is blessed with beautiful photography spots, from the lush Overton Park to the historic charm of Beale Street. Choose a photographer who is flexible and willing to work around your family’s needs.

Wrapping Up

Choosing the right family photographer is about finding a balance between artistic style, chemistry, and convenience. It's a choice that will impact how you remember these fleeting years, so it’s worth considering carefully.

As you embark on this journey to find the perfect Memphis photographer to tell your family’s story, remember: the best photos are the ones that bring out your family’s true spirit.

Happy July to all of the parents and families in West Memphis, Memphis and the MidSouth! As a seasoned photographer specializing in capturing the tender moments of newborns, I’ve come to realize that some of the most pivotal people during a session are often the ones you don’t see in the photos—the assistants. Today, I want to shine a light on these unsung heroes and explain why they are so crucial in making a newborn photography session safe, and seamless.

My assistants make sure the sessions run smoothly allowing the baby and the parents to relax and allowing me to tap into my creative mind.

Whether it’s making sure the soft blankets are non-irritative or ensuring the baby is never unattended on the posing beanbag, their vigilance makes all the difference.

Ensuring the Ultimate Safety of Your Newborn

First and foremost, the safety of your precious little ones is the absolute priority in any newborn session. Here, the role of an assistant is invaluable. They are the extra set of eyes and hands that ensure every pose is safe and every prop is secure. Whether it’s making sure the soft blankets are non-irritative or ensuring the baby is never unattended on the posing beanbag, their vigilance makes all the difference.

Anticipating the Photographer’s Needs

Superheroes! Here to save the day!

A great assistant has the uncanny ability to anticipate what the photographer needs before even the photographer knows they need it. This might sound like a superpower, and in many ways, it is! From adjusting the lighting to changing lenses or even just making sure there’s a fresh supply of wipes handy, their proactive actions allow the session to flow smoothly without disruptive pauses or hitches.

Keeping the Creative Juices Flowing

For photographers, maintaining a creative mindset during a session is crucial. It’s what allows us to see the unique angles, the special moments of connection, and the perfect lighting that captures the soul of a photograph. Assistants play a massive role in this by handling the logistics and technical details, allowing us to stay completely immersed in our artistic vision. They are our right hands and sometimes even our sounding boards. They make sure that the baby is safe and that he/she feels secure.

What to Expect at Your Newborn Photography Session with Kerry Annette Photography

What to Expect at Your Newborn Session with Kerry Annette Photography. As a dedicated Memphis and MidSouth newborn photographer, my first priority at Kerry Annette Photography is making sure your newborn is comfortable and safe.

A Warm and Cozy Environment for Your Baby

As a dedicated Memphis and MidSouth newborn photographer, my first priority at Kerry Annette Photography is making sure your newborn is comfortable and safe. To create a warm and inviting environment, the studio is kept at a cozy temperature between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. This warmth helps soothe the baby, keeping them relaxed and happy. Given the higher temperature, I recommend that parents wear light and comfortable clothing to stay cool and comfortable during the session.

Two Peas in a Pod

Our goal is to keep your baby calm and comfortable while capturing beautiful images.

Feeding Your Baby

To ensure your newborn is content and sleepy during the session, I recommend waiting to feed your baby until you arrive at the studio. A well-fed baby is often a sleepy baby, which makes for peaceful and serene photos. If you are nursing, rest assured that you will have access to a private, discreet area where you can comfortably feed your baby. This space is designed with your privacy and comfort in mind, ensuring a stress-free feeding experience.

The Session Process

Once your baby is calm and comfortable, my assistant and I will begin the photography session. We take great care in handling your newborn, using gentle and soothing techniques to keep them at ease. Depending on the type of session you have chosen, the session can last up to 3 hours. This extended time allows us to capture a variety of poses and setups without rushing, ensuring we get the perfect shots.

Parent Comfort and Convenience

While we are working with your baby, you can relax in our comfortable sitting area. We provide refreshments to make your wait enjoyable. Whether you want to unwind with a cup of coffee or a snack, we have you covered. Our goal is to create a relaxing experience for the whole family, making the session enjoyable and stress-free.
